Witness descriptions can include V-shaped, chevron-like, crescent-like, swept-wing, or boomerang-like outlines. Some observers report a visible dark structure, while others describe only a pattern of lights that creates the impression of a larger connected form.

Reported lighting varies considerably. Some accounts describe points of light along the leading edge or near the outer tips. Others involve a largely dark silhouette with only a few visible lights.

As with triangle reports, the apparent scale of a boomerang-shaped object can be difficult to judge against a featureless night sky. Without reliable distance information, estimates of size and altitude remain uncertain.

V-shaped and boomerang-like objects appear in modern UFO case literature, particularly in nighttime reports involving broad silhouettes or multiple lights moving across the sky.

Some widely discussed sighting events have included descriptions of V-shaped objects or formations, but accounts within a single event can vary. One witness may describe a solid craft while another interprets the same lights as several independent objects.

That ambiguity is important when reviewing older reports. In many historical cases, investigators did not have synchronized video, calibrated sensor information, reliable distance measurements, or other data that would allow the object's geometry to be reconstructed.

Modern AARO public reporting trends do not list boomerang or chevron as a separate morphology category. Instead, public categories include shapes such as triangle, cylinder, disk, square or polygon, orb or sphere, and a broader "other" category.

Reported Flight Characteristics

Individual reports involving V-shaped or boomerang-like objects have described a variety of apparent behaviors. These can include:

• Slow or steady movement across the sky.
• Little audible sound in some observations.
• A stable formation of visible lights.
• Changes in apparent orientation or direction.
• Hovering or apparently stationary periods in some reports.
• Faster departure from view in individual accounts.

Reports describing very large objects moving silently at low altitude require particular caution. Size, altitude, speed, and sound perception are all strongly influenced by distance, which can be difficult to establish at night.

Possible Explanations

Possible explanations depend on the individual case. They can include conventional aircraft, flying-wing aircraft, several aircraft flying in formation, drones, balloons carrying multiple lights, celestial objects, atmospheric effects, optical illusions, sensor artifacts, or objects that remain unidentified because the available data are insufficient.

Formation flight is particularly relevant to this category. Several lights maintaining consistent spacing can create the impression of a dark solid structure between them, especially when the background sky contains few visible reference points.

Experimental or classified aircraft are also frequently proposed as explanations for unusual swept or flying-wing shapes. AARO has noted more broadly that some historical UAP reports were associated with previously unfamiliar experimental or operational aerospace technologies, although that does not provide an explanation for every boomerang-shaped report.

More speculative explanations involving unconventional propulsion, gravitational effects, electromagnetic systems, or non-human technology also appear in public discussion. Publicly available evidence has not established that such technologies are responsible for reports in this category.
